A Cross-linguistic Study of Taiwanese Tone Perception by Taiwanese and English Listeners
نویسندگان
چکیده
The present study investigated tone perception by speakers of Taiwanese Southern Min and those of American English with an AX discrimination task. Two Taiwanese Southern Min tone continua were constructed from natural speech stimuli. One continuum ranged from a high level tone (T55) to a mid level tone (T33), and the other from a high level (T55) to a high falling tone (T51). The results showed that perception by Taiwanese listeners was quasi-categorical for the contour-level tone continuum but mostly continuous for the level tone-level tone one. This suggests that the findings by Abramson (1979a, b) and Wang (1976) and Chan et al. (1975) should be seen as complementary to each other rather than contradictory. Differences on tone perception between Taiwanese and English listeners were also found. Taiwanese listeners exhibited a region of higher discriminability on the T55-T51 continuum, while no discrimination peak was observed in English listeners’ data. In addition, Taiwanese listeners were more accurate than English listeners in tone discrimination. These results indicate a qualitative difference in lexical tone perception between tone and nontone language listeners: tone language listeners appear to perceive tones as phonemic categories, utilizing cues such as pitch contour, while nontone language listeners rely more on psychoacoustic factors such as pitch height (cf. Hume and Johnson 2001; Hallé et al. 2004; Huang 2007; Huang and Johnson 2010).

Perceived prosodic boundaries in Taiwanese and their acoustic correlates
This paper investigates boundary strength detection in Taiwanese and Swedish by Taiwanese listeners. Earlier production studies have suggested that the Taiwanese tone sandhi group (TSG) is an independent prosodic domain, yet no previous study has reported perceptual data to support this claim. This study presents listeners’ perceptual rating data on different prosodic domain boundaries and demo...
متن کاملAre English Learning Experiences Related to Taiwanese Female Students’ Aspiration to Cross-Cultural Romance with Western Males?
Desire has been a marginal topic in TESOL. This study investigated whether and to what extent English learning affects Taiwanese young females’ aspiration toward western males. Four hundred ninety-nine respondents filled out a questionnaire that investigates their English learning experience and aspiration to cross–culture marriage with western males. Sixteen were interviewed. Results showed co...
متن کاملThe Effect of Tone Sandhi on Speech Perception of Taiwanese Falling Tones
This study investigates phonetic and lexical effects on speech perception of two Taiwanese tones: high-falling and lowfalling, and suggests that tone sandhi also plays a role. A tonal identification task and a lexical task were conducted on 30 Taiwanese speakers. The results show that onset pitch and pitch drop are more crucial than offset pitch to the contrast of the two falling tones, and par...
متن کاملPriming the Representation of Taiwanese Tone Sandhi Words
Tone sandhi is a tonal alternation phenomenon in which a tone changes to a different tone in certain phonological environments. Taiwanese tone sandhi realizes itself in a circular chain-shift fashion. This study aims to investigate how Taiwanese disyllabic words with sandhi T51 T55 and sandhi T24 T33 are represented in the listeners’ mental lexicon, namely, whether Taiwanese listeners are m...
متن کاملBoundaries of perception of long tones in taiwanese speech
In this work we set out to investigate the fundamental frequency boundaries of perception of the Taiwanese long tones. We are interested in how the variations in fundamental frequency affect the perception of linguistic tones in Taiwanese speech. Our investigation is adopted from similar studies of tones in Mandarin speech. As opposed to Mandarin tones that can be perceived with little difficul...
